Saladin Citadel, Egypt – 2018. The Saladin Citadel of Cairo was started by Saladin in 1176 as a fortification against the Crusaders and was used by Egypt’s rulers for 700 years. In addition to the military fortress the complex includes three mosques and several palaces. The largest of the mosques is The Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha.
